As a tribute to special effects master Ray Harryhausen, Bay Area Film Events held an event at Auctions by the Bay, a newly renovated theater in the Alameda Naval Air Base. This show featured screenings of two Harryhausen classics, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and 20 Million Miles to Earth. Special short subjects included a rare Harryhausen interview conducted by John Stanley, courtesy of Creature Features and one of Ray's Fairy Tales, Hansel and Grettle. The highlight of the evening was a special effects panel featuring local SPFX luminaries. Hosted and moderated by local Creature Features host John Stanley, the incredible line-up for the panel consisted of Phil Tippett, Jim Aupperle, Webster Colcord, Justin Kohn, Brian Friesinger and Tom Gibbons. Each guest shared their memories of how Ray Harryhausen's work influenced their careers and discussed various aspects of Harryhausen's work. A display case in the lobby showcased puppets and armatures from each guests' collections and a table featured X-Plus Harryhausen statues and chess pieces for sale. Special guest Webster Colcord describes his impressions and shares photos of the evening |
